Railroads of Moore County, North Carolina
Pinehurst Electric Railroad Company (1896-1910)

This trolley line ran nine miles from the railroad depot in Southern Pines to the golf club at Pinehurst. A "Pinehurst Junction" sign at the Southern Pines depot stirred a dispute between the communities which led to an irate Southern Pines removing its portion of the line in 1905. Local Pinehurst trolley service lasted six more years.

Southern Pines, North Carolina
Railroad Depot

The Southern Pines, NC train depot, the depot that first brought doctors and neighbors from the North in the late 1800s, is still there, restored and preserved perfectly. The train still runs through Southern Pines today, as it did 100 years ago, and often you'll hear the whistle bellow from Downtown Southern Pines, as it rolls through. The town is laid out with the railroad running straight down the center.
