Cover Grading Scale
Unlike stamps, there is no uniform standard for stating the grade of a FDC, but here is the standard that I maintain. Generally I do not offer covers below the F/VF spectrum.
- Pristine / Mint
Speaks For Itself, solid cover with no flaws, mint post office fresh, open flap, clean cancellation, unaddressed. (I do not consider addressed covers as pristine.)
- Fine To Very Fine (F/VF)
Solid Cover, with several minor flaws and minor postal wear noted. An otherwise. Pristine cover that is addressed is rated Fine To Very Fine as is a cover that has a minor corner bend with perhaps some very very light gum toning that does not bleed to the front of the cover. These would be the ends of the F/VF spectrum.
- Very Good(VG)
Very Nice Collectible Cover, with numerous minor flaws, postal wear moderate to heavy and may have small tears of 1-2 mm, bends, moderate gum & general toning, etc.
- Good(G)
Still a Collectible Cover but with numerous flaws, heavy postal wear, multiple small tears, bends or creases in cover, ink smears, etc. This category could be considered to be a "space saver" category by some, depending upon the cover itself.
