SCOTT NUMBER FORMAT

  • 9999; A single stamp, not part of any series, OR a single stamp from a se-tenant sheet, where Scott has given each stamp a unique Scott Number.
  • 9999a; Multiple definitions exit:
    • If the stamp is part of a series produced in one sheet and Scott gave only one Number for the entire sheet, then the individual stamps will have a letter designation for reference.
    • If each stamp in the sheet was given a UNIQUE Scott Number, then the use of the last Scott Number in the set followed by a 'a' indicates it is a contiguous block of all stamps from the sheet.
    • If each stamp in the sheet was given a UNIQUE Scott Number, then the use of the last Scott Number in the set followed by a 'x' indicates a SET of covers - one for each stamp.
    • Scott Publishing ALSO uses letter codes to denote different types of complete booklet panes, which typically use a-e

  • BKLT; Booklet Pane on cover
  • B#; Block of (n) stamps
  • Bs; Booklet Single on cover
  • Combo; Cover with one cancel but more than one stamp. Usually Combo covers are cancelled with other stamps that a relative to the new stamp.
  • LL; Lower Left
  • LR; Lower Right
  • LP; Line pair on cover
  • M/A; Moisture activated stamp (needing moisture)
  • PB#; Plate Block on cover, (n) stamps
  • PNC#; coil strip of (n) stamps, plate number on center stamp
  • PR; pair on cover
  • PSA; Pressure Self-Adhesive (not needing moisture)

CANCELLATION TYPES

  • CDS; Circular double-ring cancellation, typically red/magenta, used for insurance/registry dating, and by request of Customers.
  • Dual; Cover with more than one cancellation.
    • This can be a FDOI cancelled on an existing FDC, combination of FDOI and UO cancels on the same day, or a FDOI and a related event cancel.
    • Sometimes the term is used for two cachets applied to one large FDC (ie. Crosby and PM Covers).
  • FDOI; First Day Of Issue. This refers to a cancellation applied that was specifically create for the First Day Event by the USPS.
  • FDOS; First Day Of Sale. This refers to a cancellation applied in a location otherthan the FDOI city, where the stamp was released Nationwide.
  • HC; Hand cancellation
  • PHC; Pictorial hand cancellation
  • SMC; slogan machine cancellation
  • SOTN; socked on the nose cancel
  • SHC; slogan hand cancellation
  • KHC#; Killer hand cancel, (#) bars
  • MC; Machine cancellation
  • UO; Unofficial cancellation, at a city other than the one designated by USPS.
    • The city should have relavence to the new stamp, be it by the city history or the words making up the city name.

  • GP/GPC; General Purpose cachet
  • HCD; Hand Colored. Frequently mis-represented as hand-painted. THEIR IS A DIFFERENCE, as any Painter will tell you.

  • OAD; Over-All Design-- cachet covers entire cover
  • PATR; Patriotic cachet
  • RSC; rubberstamped cachet
  • THM; Thermographed
  • UNC; Uncacheted cover
  • UNK; Unknown cachetmaker. A travesty! Identify these as soon as possible!!!
